Spring has sprung, and May is the month of the Chelsea Flower Show this year, so naturally, here at United Furnishings, we’re celebrating all things flora and fauna. If you’re a fan of floral patterns and prints and would like to incorporate them into your living space, this article explains how to do it tastefully.
Floral patterns and prints can take on a huge variety of colours and styles, and some are more suited to certain types of interior design. For example country, modern, vintage and industrial-themed interiors can all benefit from a dab of florals but each in a different way so as to not disrupt the look and feel of the décor. For country homes, a ditsy floral print works well, especially in soft, pastel colours. In modern homes, abstract flowers in monochrome palettes look striking. For vintage themes, you can look towards watercolour designs, and for industrial interiors, try succulents and other potted plant prints for a touch of nature against a very engineered appearance. Read on to find out more on how to incorporate floral patterns and prints into your home.
Hang some floral wallpaper
There’s something very vintage and classic about floral wallpaper. It’s most certainly a bold way of adding floral print, and it may not be for everyone as sometimes it can come across a bit too ‘twee’. We recommend a colourful floral print on an accent wall rather than a whole room. Unless it’s a very small room like a downstairs toilet where a full wallpapered look gives a modern-classic feel that’s welcoming and aesthetically pleasing.
As well as the floral design, texture plays a part in how your wallpaper will work within any given space. Raised floral wallpaper will add depth to your room and retro charm, whereas flat wallpaper has a more uniform and contemporary finish.
Invest in some floral furniture
A full-on floral sofa isn’t for the faint-hearted, and it can look a bit dated if not chosen correctly (think back to circa the ‘80s when Chintz was a hallmark of décor). The modern-day floral sofa is far chicer and more romantic compared to its yesteryear’s equivalent. You can choose to reupholster your existing sofa or perhaps invest in a floral accent chair to brighten up your living room. When it comes to choosing between a floral sofa or a floral wall, we recommend picking just one as the two together are unlikely to work very well. You want tasteful florals, nothing too bijou. If you’re not sure about floral upholstery for your furniture, a flowery throw will add colour and print to your existing seating.
Accessorise with floral furnishings
From floral scatter cushions to baroque curtains and botanical patterned rugs, flowery furnishings are an easy way to add florals to your existing décor without having to splash out too much. Be brave and go bold with clashing colours and prints for a more-is-more look or keep it pared-back with a single ditsy print against block colours. Floral furnishings are a timeless trend that comes back again and again.
Display some fresh flowers
Having the real thing is sure to bring beautiful colour and scent into your home. Freshly cut bouquets will never go out of fashion and instantly inject a feeling of joyfulness and luxury into any room. We suggest signing up for a flower subscription so that you can enjoy fresh bunches weekly, fortnightly or monthly. In almost any flower arrangement, there are focal flowers, and these are usually interesting shapes or bright colours. You then have filler flowers, which tend to have lots of little buds and are less eye-catching. Start by placing your filler flowers into a vase in a criss-cross fashion, creating a tipi. You can then add your focal flowers and make sure to play around with height. Place the taller, sturdier stems in the middle and the shorter ones on the outside for a fanned-out bouquet. If you’re not into flowers because they die quickly, try decorating your home with some dried flowers and plants instead. Pampas grass is a particularly trendy option, or tall cotton stems in a large vase are also popular.
Hang a flower wall print
Bring the outdoors in with some floral wall art. Flowery prints provide both serene and dramatic themes, and you can choose between modern and minimalist styles or flamboyant and vintage-looking designs. The beauty of art is that there are no rules, and you can simply choose what you like and pair it with other pieces that you find attractive. https://www.unitedfurnishings.co.uk/floral-glass-wall-art?keyword=floral
Assemble a 3D flower wall
Popular for special occasions and events, a 3D flower wall can also be a part of your permanent décor. Tactile, stunning and a great backdrop for taking photos, it’s sure to be one of your most cherished features in the chosen room. Choose your favourite colour and flower to make it truly special. We especially like pastel-coloured faux roses and peonies.
Hang a floral wreath
A rustic, floral wreath will brighten up your home and can be used for special occasions or all year round. Choose one with dried or faux blooms and leaves for a natural effect that lasts forever. Or choose fresh flowers and keep the look updated with different arrangements each week. Great for Easter celebrations, birthdays and baby showers or even as a table centrepiece with a pillar candle in the middle.
